Why Faster Broadband Doesn’t Always Mean Better Wi-Fi

You’ve upgraded to full fibre broadband, but your Wi-Fi still isn’t performing as well as you’d hoped. Sound familiar?

It’s a frustration we come across regularly at Bluebox. A business invests in faster broadband, expecting everything to run more smoothly, only to find that staff are still struggling with unreliable connections, slow speeds or Wi-Fi dead spots.

The problem? Your broadband connection is only one part of the picture.

Your broadband might be fast, but is your Wi-Fi keeping up?

Full fibre broadband is becoming increasingly available, with businesses able to access much faster connections than they could just a few years ago.

But upgrading your broadband doesn’t automatically improve the wireless network inside your building.

Your Wi-Fi relies on access points, network switches, cabling and the way everything has been configured. If these haven’t been reviewed for several years, they could be holding your business back.

And as businesses introduce more wireless devices, from laptops and tablets to payment terminals and other connected equipment, the demands on the network continue to grow.

A recent example: Three retail stores, one familiar problem

We recently helped an existing customer operating three bicycle retail stores.

Having already upgraded their phone system and moved to 1Gb full fibre broadband, the business was introducing more tablets into its day-to-day operations.

However, the existing Wi-Fi wasn’t providing the coverage needed to support them reliably.

Despite having a fast broadband connection, the business wasn’t getting the full benefit.

Following a network survey, our engineers upgraded the Wi-Fi infrastructure across all three stores in just two days.

The result was strong Wi-Fi 6 coverage throughout, allowing the team to make much better use of its existing 1Gb connection.

There was no need to replace the broadband. The solution was to improve the network delivering it to the devices.

Five signs your business Wi-Fi might need reviewing

  • Wi-Fi dead spots: Certain rooms or areas have poor or no wireless coverage.

  • Dropped connections: Devices lose their connection as people move around the building.

  • Slow performance: Your broadband speed is good, but wireless devices still struggle.

  • More connected devices: You’ve introduced tablets, laptops or other technology since the network was installed.

  • Business growth: You’ve taken on more staff, expanded your premises or changed how your workspace is used.

If any of these sound familiar, it might be time to look at your internal network rather than immediately upgrading your broadband package.

What difference can Wi-Fi 6 make?

Wi-Fi 6 is designed to support modern workplaces where lots of devices need reliable wireless connectivity.

Depending on your existing equipment and environment, upgrading can offer better performance, improved efficiency when multiple devices are connected and more consistent coverage when access points are correctly positioned.

But it’s important to remember that Wi-Fi 6 isn’t automatically the answer to every connectivity problem.

Sometimes the issue is poor access point placement, outdated switches, damaged cabling or simply a network that was designed for a very different business.

That’s why we always recommend starting with a proper assessment.

Is your network making the most of your broadband?

With faster full fibre services becoming more widely available, businesses have a real opportunity to improve their connectivity.

But there’s little point investing in a faster connection if the internal network can’t deliver that performance where it’s needed.

At Bluebox, we look at the complete picture, from the broadband coming into your premises to the Wi-Fi, cabling and network equipment supporting your team.
